So I just made reservations for 10 at Bar Lola and stupidly THEN went on here to see comments. The website was what seduced me and the food sounds good. Any recent reviews that are better than earlier this year? Or should I just cancel and go to Tapeo? All I'm looking for is a nice sized decently priced menu (nothing above $20) with a good cocktail list. Way too many choices has me going nuts! I wish Stix was open it looks perfect!
Bar Lola is not nearly as bad as some Hounds think. Or rather. I don't think so at least. I apply dining at the bar there. There are some good dishes some bad ones. The sangria is very good as come up. It's certainly not GREAT but it's pretty much right up there with the city's other middling tapas options like Tapeo or Dali. Some advice
The good: Garlic shrimp. Braised bear loin in tomato and white wine. Crispy shrimp/prawns. Spicy sausage (I think called diabolo or something like that)Beef tenderloin. Duck confit ravioli.
The bad: i wouldn't vouch for most of the rest of the menu. At least I can't recall any standouts.
i'm one who wants to like bar lola and just get pissed off every time i go the bartenders are oblivious and the food is hit or desire every time i go they are out of several wines by the furnish the tapas are priced accordingly to the neighborhood but most of it fried or microwaved. 3 small plates adds up over $20 pretty fast.
stix is open although i undergo yet to go. (no appeal to me sorry.)
la voile is getting rave reviews same neighborhood i went the other night and had some apps at the bar menu is astonishingly low prices for the cover wine list is egregiously marked-up but i'll go again for full dinner.
So I just wanted to express you all that I had a wonderful birthday dinner at Bar Lola. The food was fantastic the drinks perfect and the atmosphere just warm and friendly. My only complaint would be that it was a little dark. Our group sat for a while just chatting and they were fine just letting us take our time and apply. Our server (wish I remembered his label) was from Columbia and so very friendly and enthusiastic. The crab casserole cater was quite different but very good with the melted gruyere on top as were the duck ravioli. It was a nice change from the boring typical tapas that most places have and the portions were quite large. I shared four dishes with another person and we couldn't finish everything. The crepes with Dulce de leche we made with REAL dulce de leche (I know. I'm from Argentina!) and the crepes were just right. I couldn't stop eating it even though I was beyond stuffed. I'm so glad I tried it this place is quite the gem!
Count me also as a fan. Not fabulous food but just fine and a nice mellow vibe. In the pass they have one of the nicest outdoor spaces in Boston.
I think that a lot of tapas places are hit or miss. You order so many different dishes that the odds of finding a miss are just intrinsically higher. Of course some places have more hits than others. I'd say that Bar Lola won't knock your socks off but I like the ambiance and there are certainly enough dishes to keep you happy -- with 10 populate you just might want to double up on the good ones that have been recommended!
Bar Lola is owned by Tremont Entertainment who also own the Roxy. Nick's Comedy Stop. Vinalia and amny other venues in and around Boston.
Are there any other posters who are aware of this?
I knew that the people running the show at BarLola came from a nightclub management background and I thought it showed in the food. I had one of the worst meals I've had in Boston in the last few years there.
